If a thug is around, then you need be wary of just such an attack. Sap is a quick blow to the back of a victim's head, that renders them senseless and leaves them lying on the ground to be plundered. Of course a thug is not always successful when attempting to sap someone, and the victim of a failed sap will always be quite angry and attack immediately. Of course, sap must be launched with the element of surprise, and as such you may not sap in combat.
