Bard Lore:
The bard shivers slightly. He says: Hrm. The Madlands is a strange and dangerous place, my friend, not for the faint of heart. It's a large island far to the north, full of hard, rocky shores and dark, cold pine forests. Its few intelligent inhabitants are humans, natives to the area and primitive, who remind me somewhat of the natives of the mainland. They're a proud and stubborn people, suspicious of outsiders almost to the point of xenophobia. Of course, they have good reason. Their realm is haunted. Haunted not by ghosts and monster (though they have their share of those) but by gods. The Madlanders believe that the gods are insane: bizarre in aspect, capricious and downright predatory in action. They do everything they can to avoid the gods' attention. Whether or not these gods exist, I never had chance, or inclination, to verify, but I can tell you that I see no other explanation for the hideous once-human monstrosities that roam the region. I once spent a fortnight there, purely by accident mind you (but that's another story entirely). I sheltered in a small village, under the protection of a wise and level-headed elder named Tanuk. Every night, I was bundled into a longhouse with the rest of the people, as we listened to ... something .... something horrible ... tearing at the walls, trying desperately to break in! Hrm. I would advise against going to the Madlands, my friend. But if you must, I believe there is a trading ship at the mainland docks that will take you there. Look for Tanuk when you arrive and try to 'talk' with him. He's quite helpful. Oh, and ... don't go there at night.
