Title : new TWar Scoring system
TWars will now use a new scoring system instead of ranking the best players
simply by their average points per war. We felt that this encouraged
players to get in the least number of wars where they achieved the
maximum number of points for each category (5, for a week, for instance)
and then stop playing. We didn't like that so we've come up with a
metric we'll call "TWar Score". Here's what it looks like.
WEEKLY MONTHLY YEARLY ALL TIME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
# 1. 180.7 vrag 200.00 wallace 200.00 leon 200.00 leon
# 2. 173.08 stribor 158.33 stab 158.33 stab
# 3. 165.38 hoshigaki 150.00 simigwa 150.00 simigwa
# 4. 165.38 qilakitsoq 141.67 stribor 141.67 stribor
# 5. 161.54 wallace 141.67 bathala 141.67 bathala
I'm only cut-pasting the top 5 people there for brevity.
Let's go over how this works. Your TWar Score is a combination of your
points / war plus your total number of points (both of these are for the
time period in question - week, month, etc). This means that if you
play a LOT just to get a bunch of points, even if you're not that good
at getting a high number of points each war you are still improving your
standing.
To explain this more, let's look specifically at a few player's
TWarscores by typeing 'twarscore <playername>' (you can do this too).
Here's the data for Stribor: (only sowing weekly data)
----> twarscore stribor
[Weekly Rankings Score] : 173.08 = 100.00 + 73.08
P/W avg : 124.33 - rank 1 of 26, or 100th percentile
Total points: 746.00 - rank 8 of 26, or 73rd percentile
Stribor's weekly rating is 173. The following lines explain that comes
from a 1st place rating in points / war and an 8th place rating in total
points earned.
Next, let's look at Vrag's WEEKLY DATA ONLY:
[Weekly Rankings Score] : 180.77 = 80.77 + 100.00
P/W avg : 59.67 - rank 6 of 26, or 80th percentile
Total points: 1432.00 - rank 1 of 26, or 100th percentile
OK so VRag is SLIGHTLY higher than Stribor in total TWar score (in fact,
as you can see above the tabular rankings). He's only 6th place in P/W
(compared to Stribor's 1st place!) but he's 1st place in total points.
So he's being awarded for playing lots of TWars even though he hasn't
scored as well as Stribor's few matches.
Finally, let's loo at Leon: (all time stats only)
[All Time Rankings Score]: 200.00 = 100.00 + 100.00
P/W avg : 71.58 - rank 1 of 12, or 100th percentile
Total points: 10522.00 - rank 1 of 12, or 100th percentile
Notice that Leon is 1st place in Points/War *AND* most points earned.
That gets him a 1st place ranking in both groups and therefore 200 total
score. Obviously you can tell this means that any TWar score will be
bounded between [0 -> 200].
Get it? No? Go read about percentiles.
This work is thanks to Aristotle and Punk for coming up with the metric
and the complex SQL to make this all work. I just did some of the
coding and pretty printing.
